Iran: student leader moved after hunger strike

An Iranian student leader, described as "one of the most prominent symbol of the student movement in Iran war" has been moved from Even Prison in Rajaeeshahr without his family or a lawyer who reportedly Radio Free Europe reported on 18 August.

Maid Tawakoni is a well-known student activists in Iran and was arrested in December 2009 after accusing the government of human rights abuses during a rally at Amirkabir University. He is being held without charge.

Tawakoni is one of 17 political prisoners who recently declared himself on hunger strike to protest his treatment in prison.

Tawakoni’s brother told Radio Free Europe that the last contact with the family Maid was more than three weeks and had only heard of their transfer through a friend who had seen Rajaeeshahr Maid in the quarantine section.

After his arrest in 2009, state media broadcast photos of Tawakoni wearing hirable, accusing him of dressing up as a woman after the protest.

This launched the campaign "Be a man," in which hundreds of men upload photos of them wearing hirable to show their solidarity.

In 2009, Abdullah Moment and Maid Tavokoli won jointly Homo Hominid prize, which recognizes those who have contributed significantly to the protection of human rights.
