Abdullah Moment, an Iranian student activist imprisoned since 2009, was denied medical license despite the serious health problems, Radio Free Europe reported on 12 July.

Moment, who is currently serving a sentence of nearly five years in Even Prison, Tehran, spokesperson of the largest reformist student organization in Iran, the Office for Strengthening unity or Defter- Tahoka-and-e-Vanda. Has been named a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.

During his detention, Moment’s health has deteriorated and he was hospitalized twice in May with health complications.

According to his wife Fatimah Adinehvand, Mokena has denied medical license because of an open letter addressed to Ayatollah Khomeini, supreme leader of Iran, and published in September 2010.

The letter described the psychological and physical abuse that has been subjected to during his detention. The Iranian authorities did not respond to these allegations of torture.

During his detention Moment has developed severe back problems, a complication rate and a skin disease that requires specialized treatment. It also suffers from intestinal problems, which worsened with his recent hunger strike began last month with 11 other political prisoners to protest the death of two prisoners of conscience.

On June 23, after five days of hunger strike, Moment was transferred to Even infirmary with another detainee after his health deteriorated seriously.

Moment was arrested on 20 June 2009, following the contested presidential election of 2009, at the headquarters of free citizens, a group supporting the opposition politician Midi Karrabul.

After a forced confession and trial behind closed doors Moment was sentenced to six years in prison for his participation in the meetings after the elections and an extra two years in prison for activities against national security charges dating back to 2007.

An appeals court reduced his sentence to four years and 11 months in prison.
